Camp for athletes starts today

LAHORE, May 23: The Athletics Federation of Pakistan (AFP) starts a drawn-out national men and women training camp at Islamabad on Monday to prepare teams for all the impending international competitions including Asian Games-2006 , said secretary AFP Khalid Mahmood on Sunday.

He said that 19 men and five women had been invited to the camp including Muhammad Imran (male) and Naseem Hameed (female) who would represent the country in the Asian junior championship's 200m and 100 metre races.

The competition is scheduled to be held in Kuala Lumpur in June. Imran will also compete in the World junior championship to be staged in Italy in July this year, he added.

Similarly, he said that Muhammad Sajid (400m race) from Wapda and Sumaira Zahoor (1500m race) from Pakistan Ordnance Factory, who had been selected for Athens-2004 Olympics, would also attend the camp.

The teams, which would represent Pakistan in the 10th South Asian Games to be held in Sri Lanka and the first Islamic Solidarity Games in Saudi Arabia in April next year, would also be gleaned from the camp probables.

Following probables were invited to the camp:

Men:

200m: Muhammad Imran (Army)

400m: Basit Munir (Wapda).

100/200m: Afzal Baig (Army).

1500m: Atta Miran (Army).

110m hurdles: Abdul Rashid (Railways).

400m hurdles: Allah Ditta (Army).

Long jump: Ghulam Abbas (Army).

Javelin throw: Zahid Hussain (Police)

400m: Muhammad Sajid (Wapda).

Trip jump/long jump: Waseem Khan (Army).

400m: Rana Saghir Ahmed (Wapda), Saeed Ahmad (Railways).

800m: Irshad Fazal (Wapda).

5000m: Naushad Khan (Army) 110m hurdle, Muhammad Shah (Wapda).

400m hurdle: Muhammad Adil (Army).

Javelin throw: Muhammad Irfan (Wapda).

Triple jump: Zafar Iqbal (Army).

800m: Inam Ali Shah (Wapda).

Women: 800m: Gulnaz Ara (Wapda) 1500m, Sumaira Zahoor (POF).

400m: Bushra Parveen (POF).

100/200m: Saira Fazal (Wapda).

100m: Naseem Hameed (Railways).

Camp-commandant: Capt. Mehmood Riaz (Army). Coaches: Chaudhry Muhammad Yousuf (Punjab), Allah Ditta (Army), Muhammad Siddique (Punjab), Muhammad Asghar Gill (Railways), a Chinese coach yet to be named.
