HYDERABAD, May 19: A meeting held by the Sindh Zakat, Ushr and Religious Affairs Minister, Dr Irfan Gul Magsi, here on Tuesday recommended to the Sindh government that the demolished GPO mosque be rebuilt.
The meeting, held at the office of the AIGP, Hyderabad region, decided that if funds required for the mosque construction were not provided by the authorities concerned, residents of Hyderabad would make contributions for the purpose.
It also formed a sub-committee, comprising district Nazim and Naib Nazim, MPAs Arshad Shah and Abdul Rehman Rajput, DCO and the DPO, to supervise the construction work.
The meeting also recommended action against those who ordered the mosque demolition. Earlier, the minister listened to views of representatives of the GPO and clerics. He said that there was no justification in demolishing the 55-year-old mosque.
He said post office authorities had raised no objection to the existence of the mosque for 55 years. The GPO authorities had demolished the old mosque without taking the DPO and authorities concerned into confidence.
The minister called upon clerics to maintain peace and harmony in the larger national interest. He lauded the role of the district administration in maintaining peace and holding dialogue with the authorities on the issue.
The meeting was attended by MPAs Arshad Shah and Abdul Rehman Rajput, religious affairs secretary Qabool Ahmad Shaikh, AIGP, DIGP, DCO, DPO, and clerics of different sects.
TREE PLANTATION: The adviser to the Sindh chief minister on forestry, Aijaz Shah Sherazi, has directed officials of the department to launch a tree plantation campaign on the forest land and warned that theft or cutting of wood would not be tolerated.
He said this while presiding over a meeting of department officials at the circuit house here on Tuesday. He said anyone involved in cutting or theft of trees would be dealt with an iron hand. The adviser also directed the officials to take action against those who had occupied the forest land.
