PESHAWAR, April 25: Fida Gul and Ishaq Khalil, candidates backed by a tripartite alliance of lawyers affiliated with the Muttahida Majlis-e-Amal, Pakistan People's Party and Pakistan Muslim League-N , were elected president and general-secretary of the Peshawar District Bar Association during the annual elections here on Saturday.

Fida Gul, who belongs to the Islamic Lawyers' Movement, defeated Arbab Bukhtiar of the Malgaray Wakeelan, which is affiliated with the ANP, with a margin of 24 votes. He secured 268 votes against 244 secured by Mr Bukhtiar.

Similarly, Ishaq Khalil of the People's Lawyers Forum secured 249 votes against 202 voted bagged by Saeed Zahir Shah of the Malgaray Wakeelan. The candidate contesting on the alliance's panel for the post of vice-president Jamrooz Khan was defeated. He received 144 votes while the winning candidate of the Malgaray Wakeelan, Amjid Ali Khan, got 352 votes.

Another candidate on the tripartite alliance's panel, Ashfaq Jhagra, was elected secretary finance. He received 241 votes. Against two posts of joint secretary Kanwar Shah of the alliance and Asif Masood of Malgaray Wakeelan were declared elected as they received 262 and 231 votes, respectively. For the four posts of cabinet members, three contestants belonging to the Malgaray Wakeelan and one of the alliance were elected.
