ISLAMABAD, April 23: The chairman of Standing Committee on Interior, Sardar Talib Hassan Nakai, has directed the Capital Development Authority (CDA) to evolve a comprehensive strategy to overcome the looming threat of water shortage in the capital , especially in summer.

According to a press release issued here, the standing committee met at the Parliament House, on Friday. The committee chairman said despite initiation of several proposals, the CDA had not yet been able to overcome the shortage.

The members of the committee were also critical of CDA's performance. The committee chairman further directed the CDA to focus on the uplift and sanitation problems of specially the densely populated sectors of Islamabad and to introduce radical reforms in the authority to root out the menace of corruption and inefficency.

Earlier, interior secretary briefed the committee on the organizational structure and functions of the ministry and its attached department. He apprised the committee of the ministry's acts as a central policy making and administrative authority and gave them policy guidelines, as and when deemed necessary. All the departments under the interior ministry had performed well in their ambit.

The committee also observed that despite having state-of-art equipment and experienced personnel, the National Database and Registration Authority (Nadra) had a "pathetic delivery system of computerized national identity cards (CNICs)."

Mr Nakai directed Nadra chairman to evolve a foolproof system for the delivery of CNICs at the doorsteps of the applicants and also to establish Nadra swift centres and mobile registration counters in the remote areas. The chairman asked the interior ministry to implement the Police Order 2000, in letter and spirit.

He said the institutions to be established under that order would enhance the Public-Police relations and remove public grievances.

Makhdoom Faisal Saleh Hayat, Minister for Interior MNAs Rajab Ali Khan Baloch, Syed Tasneem Nawaz Gardezi, Mohammad Saeed Virk, Amanullah Khan Jadoon, Shahid Akram Bihinder, Onza Ehsan, Amjad Ali Warraich, Syed Nayyar Hussain Bokhari, Mian Mohammad Aslam, Farid Paracha, Maulana Ghulam Mohammad Sadiq, interior secretary and other officers of the departments concerned attended the meeting.
