TOKYO, April 11: Indonesian-born Ronald Susilo and Mia Audina Tjiptawan shone in the Japan Open badminton tournament beating top Chinese to win the men's and women's singles titles on Sunday.
Susilo, who gained Singaporean citizenship two years ago, enjoyed the best day in his career when he outclassed world number five Bao Chunlai with a 15-13, 15-6 success to win his biggest career men's title.
Atlanta Olympic silver medallist Audina, who represents the Netherlands, shocked reigning world number one and All- England champion Gong Ruina 7-11, 11-7, 11-7 to win back the women's title she took seven years ago as an Indonesian.
China suffered a major set back as they finished without a title here for the first time in 10 years, failing to win in four finals in the 180,000 dollar event. Ra Kyung-Min and Lee Kyung-Won of South Korea defeated Wei Yili and Zhao Tingting 15-6, 6-15, 15-6 to win the women's doubles, while their compatriots Ha Tae-Kwon and Kim Dong-Moon downed Fu Haifeng and Cai Yun 15-7, 6-15, 15-6 to win the men's doubles.
The remaining mixed doubles title went to Indonesia's Nova Widianto and Vita Marissa, the winners over Sudket Prapakamol and Saralee Thungthongkam of Thailand 15-10, 15-13 earlier in the day.
Susilo used an array of effective disguised overhead drops to Bao's backhand front corner and elicited some errors off the Chinese left-hander before taking the first game from a 10-13 down.
Susilo jumped ahead 7-2 from a 2-all in the second game, often showing quick attacks at the net to win a rally, and when he was leading 11-4, it was apparently Susilo's day.
