PESHAWAR, April 11: Vice-chancellor of University of Peshawar Mumtaz Gul has underlined the need of improving the curricula and the method of teaching with a view to bringing "our education on a par with international standards."

Addressing the Law graduates at the Convocation 2004 of the Faculty of Law, University of Peshawar, here on Saturday, he said the lawyers had to play a vital role in the legal system of the country.

More than 300 students received their LLB degrees. For the session 2002, Nadia Syed secured gold medal while Sanam Murtza was awarded the vice-chancellor medal. Wadeeya Mushtaq and Amna Kiran received the dean faculty of Law medal and Shumaila Shuakat grabbed the barrister Nisar Khan medal.

Jalal Khan received gold medal for the session 2003 while Sanam Khan and Mohammad Ishaq received the VC's and dean faculty of law's medal, respectively. The VC said that law graduates had to make sure that law was reformed in line with the needs of our society and as practicing lawyers they should create respect for the rule of law.

Congratulating the young graduates, he said they were part of a respectable profession, so they must work hard and make a name in their community. He urged the graduates to be honest at all costs while pursuing their careers. "It involves treating your fellow lawyers, adjudicators, government officials and your clients with civility and sensitivity to their needs," he said.
