KARACHI, May 19: Adequate provision for counselling was stressed by experts to help combat the menace of addiction in the country.

Speaking at a Healthcare Forum here, a panel of doctors and psychiatrists called for active involvement of local women in the crusade against addiction.

It was maintained that while the rate of addiction among women is comparatively quite low, yet they are some ultimate sufferers of the situation.

Prof Amin Gadet of Hamdard Medical University, stressing equal need for elimination of illiteracy, poverty and unemployment, maintained that a strong and efficient role played by local mothers could significantly help reduce the intensity of the situation.

According to him, family counselling can play an important role, particularly when an addict is put on treatment plan.

He maintained that mothers here have to reflect a stronger aspect of their personality and see that the offspring is not allowed to turn wayward.

Dr Majid Abidi also sought maximum support of womenfolk in the campaign against addiction as they, through care and due attention, can help restore the confidence and trust of their brothers, spouse and sons, respectively.

He, however, acknowledged that rampant poverty has compelled many women to indulge in the deadly practice of drug- trafficking.

Prof Haider Ali G. Kazi, in his presidential address, said that Women’s Day provides women every year an opportunity to review their contribution as well as responsibilities assigned to them under Islam.

He maintained that compliance to Islamic rules and principles could help any society to overcome difficulties.—APP
