HYDERABAD, Feb 16: Jeay Sindh Qaumi Mahaz activists observed a token hunger strike outside the press club here on Monday to protest against construction of the Thal canal and the Kalabagh dam.

Talking to journalists, JSQM leaders Babu Mirani, Chacha Qasim, Murtaza Mughal, Shahid Soomro and others said party activists were observing a hunger strike unto death outside the Karachi Press Club against the water projects.

They said they were observing the hunger strike to express solidarity with the Karachi activists. They said they would continue their struggle till the disputed water projects were shelved.

WORKSHOP: Strengthening Participatory Organization regional director Noor Mohammad Bajir has said democracy is not restricted to just casting of votes but it is aimed at educating members of the society about their political responsibilities.

He was speaking at the first session of a three-day workshop on "Responsibilities of Civil Society in a Democratic System" organized by the organization in collaboration with "The Asia Foundation" at here on Sunday.

In the second session of the workshop, noted intellectual Jami Chandio said members of the civil society could perform a positive role only in a true democratic setup, adding that in such a setup, an individual had the right to express his opinion. He said democracy guaranteed peace and justice. The workshop was attended by activists of various social welfare organizations.
