PESHAWAR, Feb 12: A United Nations worker was injured when he was hit with rifle butts by some unidentified attackers after his vehicle came under fire at Azakhel area on GT Road on Thursday night, police said.

A doctor at the city's Khyber Teaching Hospital said the UN worker, identified as Haji Fazal Kareem from Afghanistan, had received head injuries but his condition was stable.

Officials at Azakhel police station told Dawn on phone that unknown attackers in a car fired at the UN vehicle and when it stopped the attackers dragged the official out of his vehicle and started hitting him with the rifle butts. His two companions, including a female, escaped unhurt.

Haji Kareem told the police that he was attached with a UN-demining agency in Afghanistan and the number of attackers was six. The UN vehicle came under attack at Azakhel, some 24 kilometres from here, he added.
