NA council submits reform bill

Published January 26, 2004

GILGIT, Jan 25: The Northern Areas Legislative Council (NALC) has submitted the reform bill, prepared by its legal committee, to the administration for implementation, sources told Dawn on Sunday.

The sources said most of the members had supported the bill, prepared by amending the Legal Framework Order for the Northern Areas, in the last session of the NALC held on Jan 6.

The bill was prepared on recommendations of the centre by the NALC legal committee. The working paper recommends upgradation of the NALC status to that of an assembly, creation of the posts of chief executive and lieutenant-governor to represent the federation of Pakistan in the Northern Areas, besides outlining powers for the proposed assembly, demanding representation in the federal cabinet, setting up of a supreme appellate court, public service commission and setting up of an upper house in the Northern Areas.
