KARACHI: New archbishop of Karachi

KARACHI, Jan 7: Reverend Evarist Pinto has been appointed Archbishop of Karachi, according to an announcement by the Vatican. A press release says "Archbishop Evarist Pinto was born on Dec 31, 1939 , and was admitted to the Minor Seminary of Quetta in 1960 and later to the Christ-the-King Major Seminary of Karachi in 1962 when he completed his formation to the priesthood.

After his priestly ordination on Jan 6, 1968, he was appointed Assistant Parish Priest at St. Patrick Cathedral and counsellor of St. Patrick High School (1966-69). He obtained a doctorate in biblical theology at the Urbanian University, Rome, and a masters' degree in sacred scripture at the "Biblicum".

In the Archdiocese of Karachi, he has served as Professor of Sacred Scripture and Librarian at "Christ-the-King Seminary" Karachi, member of the Archdiocesan Liturgical Commission; Archdiocesan Director of the Pontifical Mission Societies (1973-1979); Professor of Spirituality at "Christ-the-King" Seminary, Karachi; Dean of Studies of the same Major Seminary (1981-1990); Parish Priest of St. Lawrence Church (1987-1993); Parish Priest of St. Paul, Karachi (1993-1999); Assistant of the Archdiocesan Catechetical Centre and teacher of Sacred Scripture at St. Patrick High School (1999-2000).
