KARACHI, Jan 23: Justice Qaiser Iqbal of the Sindh High Court on Friday issued notices to the advocate-general of Sindh and an official of the special investigation unit of police for Feb 3 in a case pertaining to ‘illegal’ confinement. Petitioner Haji Sualeh Mohammad, a government contractor, moved the court against the provincial home secretary and a sub-inspector of the SIU, Saleem Khan Qureshi.

The petitioner’s counsel, Shaukat Hussain Zubedi, submitted that the policeman alleged that Haji Sualeh Mohammad was the ringleader of a gang of robbers and detained him at Jamshed Quarters police station. The sub-inspector demanded a bribe of Rs10 million to release him, though he freed the petitioner after collecting Rs900,000.

He prayed to the court to direct police high-ups to take action against the investigation official concerned.

After preliminary hearing, Justice Qaiser Iqbal issued notices to AG Sindh and SIU official for Feb 3. The respondent policeman was directed to appear in person with relevant record. The court also restrained him from harassing or humiliating the petitioner.—PPI
