TAIPEI, Jan 21: Three relatives of former president Chen Shui-bian pleaded guilty to money-laundering on Wednesday in a case that also involves the former leader, Taiwan media reported.

Taiwan’s Central News Agency and several cable TV news stations reported that Chen’s son, daughter-in-law, and the brother of former first lady Wu Shu-chen had pleaded guilty. A spokesman for the Taipei District Court would not confirm the reports. Chen’s son, Chen Chih-chung, appeared to express remorse for his alleged role in the case.

“I would not have done this again if I could turn back the clock,” he was quoted as telling the media outside the courthouse.

The former president and his wife have also been indicted in the case, which concerns the transfer of funds to foreign banks.

Chen has denied the accusations but has admitted moving money overseas that he says were leftover campaign contributions. Under Taiwanese law, he is free to dispose of such funds as he sees fit.

On Monday, Chen pleaded not guilty to charges of receiving bribes in a separate corruption case.—AP
