TOBA TEK SINGH, Jan 11: Local irrigation employees have alleged theft of sand worth millions of rupees from the bed of Jhang branch canal in Toba, Gojra and Nawan Lahore areas during last ten days.

At a press conference held here on Sunday irrigation employees’ union leader Allah Bakhsh Sial said the sand thieves were being backed by some area influential.

He said that those involved in the theft also subjected irrigation employees to torture whenever they tried to stop them.

He said the theft was also damaging banks of the canal which had been facing seasonal closure, fearing that when the water supply would be restored there could be breaches in the channel.

He demanded Faisalabad irrigation chief engineer should take serious notice of the situation and get cases registered against the thieves, besides ensuring safety of the department employees.

It is learnt there were 17 deer in the 15-acre park, where thieves entered by cutting fences and took away five of them. Kamalia police have registered a case.
