KARACHI, Dec 30: The Ministry of Sports will soon approach the Higher Education Commission (HEC) for reintroducing sports quota in admission policy of the educational institutions across the country.

This was unanimously resolved at the third Inter-provincial sports minister’s committee meeting held in the city on Tuesday with Federal Sports Minister Pir Aftab Shah Jilani in the chair.

“In addition, the HEC will also be apprised that sports funds which the institutions charge from students at the time of admission should be spent exclusively on sports,” Secretary Sports Sindh Shoaib Siddiqui told Dawn.

In this connection, the provincial sports ministers will liaison with respective education secretary for its early implementation he said adding that local governments in the four provinces will also be asked to spent two percent of their budget on sports.

Referring to the issue of job quota for international sportspersons, he said the government and semi government autonomous departments will be asked to provide them jobs.

The NWFP sports minister was assigned the task to examine details of equipments lying in access at the PSB headquarters in Islamabad and the requirements of the provinces so that it could be utilised, he remarked.

Similarly, a two-member committee comprising former international athlete Niva Ehsan and Joint Secretary Ministry of Sports Anwar Khan was formed to suggest disciplines and cities for setting up sports academies in the country.

The Sindh sports minister, he said, urged for developing beach sports in the city.

The meeting which lasted for over two hours was attended among others by Sindh Sports Minister Dr Mohammad Ali Shah, NWFP Sports Minister Aqil Shah, Punjab Sports Minister Dr Tanveerul Islam, Joint Secretary Ministry of Sports Anwar Khan, Deputy Secretary Ministry of Sports Riazul Islam who is also secretary of the committee, Secretary Sports Sindh Shoaib Siddiqui, Chairperson Punjab Chief Minister’s Task Force for Sports, Niva Ehsan, Secretary Sports Balochistan and representative of Fata.
