TOBA TEK SINGH, May 12: The Federal Seed Certification and Registration Department has received a number of complaints about the marketing of unregistered and spurious cotton seed in small towns.

Growers had to face losses during the last year because their per acre yield dropped due to the sowing of low standard seed.

An official told newsmen that a local trader’s godowns had been specifically pointed out to the department. A raid was organized on godowns without taking into confidence officials of the local Agriculture Department and others to maintain secrecy.

A team comprising Agriculture deputy directors, Multan and Faisalabad, and other staff of both cities raided godowns on the Jhang Road near a flour mills and recovered over 1,300 seed bags worth thousands of rupees.

The raiding team sealed the godowns and recommended the high-ups for further legal action.
