LAHORE, Dec 3: A documentary entitled “The Sky Below” on the events of 1947 was screened at Alhamra Art Centre on The Mall on Wednesday.

The 75-minute documentary talks about the partition of Pakistan and India. It has been directed and produced by Sarah Singh, who was born in India and raised in America. Various places located in Pakistan, India and Kashmir have been shown in the documentary supported by comments of people living there. These people talk about merits and demerits of the partition.

Ms Singh says the documentary covers 5,000-year history of the subcontinent. It is about the exploration of partition and a portrait potential for reconciliation.

Places visited by the director to shoot the film include Harrapa, Taxila, Tharparkar, Katas Raj, Hasan Abdal and other ancient, historic and archeological sites located both in Pakistan and India. Significantly, the director has highlighted the music of every place where she shot the documentary. The cinematography is remarkably good.

The director says the documentary, best of the South Asian Film Festival, has been screened at 20 film festivals so far.

It has interviews by known figures both from Pakistan and India. All those interviewed came up with mixed comments on Partition and recalled the horrors of migration the loot and plunder, bloodshed and rapes. A number of people emphasised the need for people-to-people contacts between Pakistan and India.

Ms Singh says the documentary, which has also been screened in Islamabad, took two years to complete.
