NYON (Switzerland), Nov 29: AS Roma has been charged by UEFA in connection with crowd trouble at its Champions League match against Chelsea.

UEFA said on Friday the Italian club, which is hosting this year’s Champions League final, must answer charges of “insufficient organization” of spectators and fireworks being set off in the Stadio Olimpico stands at the game on Nov 4.

At least one Italian was arrested after fighting among fans before the match, which Roma won 3-1. The case will be heard at a Dec 11 meeting of UEFA’s control and disciplinary panel.

The charges will add to speculation that Rome could be stripped of hosting rights for the Champions League final on May 27 because of a reputation for football hooliganism.

UEFA President Michel Platini said after the Chelsea match that the city must show it was capable of staging the showpiece match.—AP
