SAHIWAL, Nov 29: District monitoring officials, in collaboration with Unicef, Punjab, would collect 1,186 drinking water samples from selected public schools to gauge the nitrate, fluoride, arsenic and bacterial contents, Dawn has learnt.
There are reports of high concentration of fluoride, nitrate and bacterial contents in the drinking water causing waterborne diseases among schoolchildren in rural as well as urban localities.
Education EDO Ms Wasif told Dawn on Saturday that water sampling would be done in primary, middle and high schools in urban and rural areas.
She further said the water sample would be collected from tanks and other sources on school premises.
District Monitoring Officer Shafiq Dogger said all necessary training for conducting sampling had been imparted to his staff by Unicef officials. "Necessary equipment used for water sampling has arrived, besides the sampling plan. The sample collection would be starting from December 1," he added.
MEPCO NOTICES: The Mepco has issued final notices to District Nazim and its affiliated offices, police and Central Jail for clearance of outstanding bills to the tune of Rs 7.2 million.
According to official sources, the district nazim and its affiliated offices having 1133 connections owe the company Rs2.9m while the police and jail, having 213 connections, are defaulters of Rs4.3 million.
OUTLAWS: The district police, during the last six months, captured 140 criminals belonging to 45 gangs and involved in dacoities, robberies, killings and kidnap for ransom, DPO Traiq Abbas told news on Saturday.
