Godowns lack space for imported wheat

Published November 30, 2008

SUKKUR, Nov 29: Some 25 to 30 trailers loaded with imported wheat are waiting unloading at Food Department godowns for last 48 hours due to insufficient space.

The Food Department Sukkur, after wheat harvest, procured more stuff to meet the target but it could not accommodate it.

More than 50 trailers coming from Karachi to Sukkur and carrying imported wheat had been stranded at different petrol pumps on the National Highway. However, trailer drivers told journalists they would sustain loss in millions if these were not unloaded on time. They have demanded of the Sindh government to make arrangements to unload wheat or pay them extra fare per day as waiting charges.

District food controller said that today some 15 to 20 trailers were stationed outside different godowns situated in the Site area, Arain Road and Rohri and efforts were under way for their storage. He said that most remaining trailers were destined for Khairpur district.—Correspondent
