MITHI, Nov 22: The Tharparkar district council passed a resolution here on Friday, urging the government to declare the district a calamity-hit area, initiate relief measures forthwith and stop recovery of land revenue etc. from the growers in violation of the orders of the Sindh relief commissioner and the DCO against such recoveries.
Moving the resolution, council member Abdul Subhan Sodho pointed out that inadequate and erratic monsoon rains have caused crop failure due to which not only livestock but the people here were starving, hence the government must declare it as a calamity-hit district, besides launching relief measures.
The council members deplored that the patwaris have launched a recovery drive in Thar.
The council unanimously passed the resolution, demanding of the government to declare Tharparkar district calamity-hit, launch relief measures and announce an end to recoveries.
Passing other resolutions, the council urged the government to allocate ten per cent quota for youths of Tharparakar in federal services and the qualification for youths for the post of primary teacher be fixed as matric instead of intermediate.
Speaking at a point of order, Arbab group’s council member Razaullah Nohri alleged that the peons serving in education department in Mithi town (supporters of Arbab group) have been transferred to remove villages as political victimisation. The convener Abdul Karim Rahoomo was in chair at the session.
FAIR: A children fair was organised here at the government high school ground under the aegis of Thardeep Rural Development Programme Child Rights Unit in collaboration with Save the Children to commemorate International Children Day.
Children from Tharparkar and Umerkot districts set stalls of books, toys, machine models, tools handicrafts, at the fair that was visited by a large number of children, students, women and others belonging to different walks of life. DCO Tharparkar Samiuddin Siddiqui inaugurated the fair.
Presenting tableau, feature, short plays and songs at the occasion, the children wearing traditional dresses, highlighted the plight of children and particularly child labour.
Speaking at the occasion, Abid Channa, General Manager TRDP Child Rights Unit said that the objective of holding children fair was to create awareness among the people that the children were the greatest asset of the nation.
