LAHORE, Nov 16: Cut Throat, a three-year-old colt, produced an excellent twist in the closing stages when he edged out joint-favourite filly Soviet Song to win the over 1,600 metres Karachi Cup at the Racecourse on Sunday.

The six-event card at the 11th Lahore Winter Meeting on a partly cloudy day was thronged by a sizeable number of sports connoisseurs. The even-money favourite Cut Throat beat filly Soviet Song by a short-head in an exciting finish after a ding-dong duel witnessed between the two in the last 100 metres.

Spiritual Song and Lucky Winner completed the frame among the six runners left in the class I, II and III handicap race.

Cut Throat’s win gave owner Syed Tasweer Hussain, trainer Sohail Aziz and rider Azhar Hussain their biggest success of the season. It also brought to an end Soviet Song’s, who ruled the course for three consecutive wins, winning streak.

The main supporting event, the over 1,300 metres Kassowal Plate, class IV division I, II and III was won by filly Princess Ginza, who proved as strong and utterly reliable as ever.

She beat Nishat Malook by over six lengths. Victory Hero and Vendetta completed the frame among the 10 starters.

The bookmakers and punters shared the day evenly when three favourites won in a card of six events. The first three events were backed by long shots when favourites tasted defeat one after the other.

The major shock of the day for backers of favourites came in the opener when three of the backed horses in the event were beaten and the race was won by rank outsider filly Dream Act, owned by Sohrab Khan.
