MITHI, Nov 9: Sindh Relief Commissioner and senior member of the Board of Revenue, Ashfaq Ahmed Memon, arrived here on Sunday to assess the drought situation in Tharparkar district.

At a meeting with revenue officials and journalists, the relief commissioner held detailed discussion and sought their suggestions about strategy to tackle the drought-like condition in the desert area and measures to provide maximum relief to the people.

He directed the revenue officials to postpone land revenue and other recoveries from growers till further orders.

He said that recommendation would be made to the Sindh government to ensure provision of subsidised wheat through ration card and depot system on the basis of lists of people to be prepared by union council nazims and notables. He said that wheat quota of Chakkis would be increased so that the people could obtain flour from Chakkis at reasonable rates.

He said that if needed, disaster management committees at the federal and provincial level would be moved for relief initiatives. The government was aware of miseries of calamity-affected Tharis and it would not leave them in lurch, he said.
