LARKANA, Nov 5: People rescued a sacked policeman who attempted to torch himself near DIG office on Wednesday out of sheer desperation and frustration.

Former policeman Ghulam Ali Shaikh tried to torch himself but for a passerby who jumped to rescue him. He then threw himself before a speeding car but again the driver saved him by applying brakes on time.

He later told journalists that he was recruited in police in 1994 and the DPO dismissed him from service in 2002 when he remained absent for 10 days due to his mother’s illness. He made an appeal to restore his job but it was rejected, he said.

Ali who is a father of five said that he was so desperate and disappointed that he chose to commit self-immolation after failing to feed his family.

The DIG of Larkana later met the frustrated cop and asked him to meet him on Thursday in his office. He promised to reconsider his case.—Correspondent
