LAHORE, May 10: An accountability court on Friday extended the physical remand of two of the accused involved in two cases of the Emirates Bank fraud up to May 15.

After arresting Agha Matloob and Shahzad Nasim, the NAB initiated a fresh probe into two bank frauds involving Rs 208 million and Rs 80 million last month.

It also got the cases transferred from a banking court to accountability court on April 17 last.

Both the accused moved application simultaneously before the accountability court and Lahore High Court, pleading that it was not within the jurisdiction of an accountability court to hold their trial.

Counsel of the accused apprised the court that a similar application had been fixed for hearing in the LHC on May 13.

The court, therefore, partly heard their arguments and adjourned it to May 16 to let the high court adjudicate the matter.

NAWAZ KHOKHAR: An accountability court on Friday dismissed an application for the quashment of land fraud reference against Nawaz Khokhar, former deputy speaker, National Assembly.

The application was filed under 265-K of CrPC, much later than its due time and after the trial court had already completed evidence recording.

On the pointation of the court, the accused did not press for it.

Khokhar is already on bail in the land mutation fraud of 150 kanals. He also struck a bargain with NAB in his second corruption reference. He is also alleged to have obtained kickbacks in the Islamabad New City project which also involved former NWFP chief minister Aftab Sherpao. The reference in the New City scam is still in the initial stage.—APP
