SAHIWAL, Oct 25: A prisoner facing trial for killing his niece was rearrested from Faisalabad after he had escaped from the District Central Jail on Thursday.
Reports said Muhammad Khalid, a resident of Sahiwal, had allegedly killed his niece Yesra Tahir for grabbing the property of his elder brother Muhammad Tahir, who had returned from the USA after living there for 20 years. He was booked in a murder case by city police and was imprisoned in the District Central Jail. The murder trial was under way at the Sessions Court.
On Thursday noon, he was brought by the jail officials for case hearing to the court of Judge Muhammad Ayub Marth. After the hearing, Khalid, along with 41 other prisoners, was reportedly brought back to the prison van.
According to a source, Khalid managed to escape while the prisoners were being shifted back to the jail.
Khalid’s escape was revealed dramatically when his elder brother, Tahir, saw him outside the school, at 3:30pm on Thursday, where her elder daughter studied. Khalid, on seeing his brother, slipped away.
“I was shocked, as being a prisoner Khalid must be in the Central Jail,” Tahir said while talking to Dawn.
Tahir said he rushed to the District Center Jail to report the matter, but for two-and-a-half hour jail officials kept refusing to believe him, insisting Khalid was inside the jail.
“After failing to convince the lower staff and without being permitted to see any officer, I returned home at about 6:30pm. My family got frightened on knowing about Tahir’s escape as he could harm anyone,” Tahir said.
“At about 7pm, the jail administration started calling me. Admitting Khalid had escaped from the jail’s gate, they were asking about his possible hideouts,” he added.
Tahir informed the jail officials that Khalid might go to his in-laws’ house in Faisalabad. After that, Khalid’s in-laws were taken into confidence and the Mansoorabad SHO was informed of the situation. The moment Khalid reached his in-laws’ house, police nabbed him.
At last, Khalid was brought back to Sahiwal District Jail on Friday after about 24 hours of his escape.
Jail Superintendent Naveed Rauf could not be contacted despite repeated attempts.
According to the source, Prisons DIG Mian Salik visited Sahiwal to fix the responsibility for the prisoners’ escape.
HOUSE ON FIRE: A fire breaking out in a car parked in the garage of a house gutted furniture and other household items worth hundreds of thousands of rupees on Saturday.
Reports said Tanvir Nasir parked his CNG-driven car in the garage of his Farid Town house (78/F) at 2:30am on Friday. At about 5:30am, Nasir’s neighbour called him at his cell phone and informed him that his car had caught fire.
“I rushed to the garage and saw a huge fire had engulfed the car,” Nasir told Dawn at his residence.
“I immediately woke up my two children, wife, mother and two visiting cousins and moved out of the house through its backdoor. Suddenly, two explosions occurred, intensifying the fire which engulfed the other rooms as well,” he added.
According to eyewitnesses, the first blast occurred because of a gas connection in the garage, while the second was caused when CNG tank of the car busted.
“All furniture, carpets, curtains and electric appliances were reduced to ashes,” Nasir said.
Tanvir suspected someone had tried to kill him and his family members. However, he did not mention any person when asked to name his alleged enemy.
Rescue 1122 fire fighters who were immediately called extinguished the fire.
