KARACHI, Oct 25: Bodies of two newborns were found on Saturday at as many places in the city, taking the number of such victims to five in the current month alone, witnesses said.

The Chhipa Welfare Association said that the body of a newly born baby was found in a drain in Gulistan-i-Jauhar.

It said volunteers took out the body and shifted it to the association’s head office for ablution and it was subsequently buried at the Mewa Shah graveyard.

The second body was found in the bushes at a desolate place in Surjani Town.

Sources said that on average three bodies of newborns were found in a month in different parts of the city, mostly in garbage dumps.

They said three bodies of newborns were found in July, three in August and two in September.

The Edhi Trust said it had moved three bodies of newborn babies on Oct 6, 12 and 16.

It said not a single baby had been put into the cradle placed in front of Edhi’s main office at Tower for the past three years, despite repeated appeals by the trust to leave unwanted children with the trust.
