PESHAWAR, Oct 20: Members of the Town-II council on Monday expressed resentment over the reports about NWFP government’s move to ‘weaken’ the LG system and asked the government to honour mandate of the local bodies and stop conspiring against them.

A meeting of the Town-II council was held at the town hall with its convener Advocate Israrullah in the chair, where the speakers claimed that the local governments were popular among the masses and they would resist any move against the system.

The speakers including Town-II Nazim Haji Mohammad Sharif and members Zafeer Khan, Liaquat Khan, Mrs Rumana Ajmal, Abid Khan and Shaukat Hayat asked the government to hold referendum about the future of LG system.

The council also discussed various development schemes and asked the concerned officials to conduct anti-malarial spray in all the localities as soon as possible as swarming mosquitoes made the lives of people miserable.

The convener directed all the members to submit within one week their proposals regarding development schemes in their respective areas so that work on the PC-I could be initiated. The house also unanimously adopted a resolution tabled by Auction Committee Chairman Haji Said Rehman regarding cancellation of contract of Bagh Park swimming pool due to default by the contractor.

The meeting was largely attended by the council members. The convener adjourned the meeting for indefinite period.— Bureau Report
