Lahore, Oct 15: Star-studded Pakistan Water and Power Development Authority (Wapda) recorded scrappy 2-0 win over Faisalabad’s Punjab Medical College (PMC), getting both goals in final nine minutes, in the first leg of ongoing Pakistan Premier Soccer League 2008 at Garhi Shahu’s Railway Stadium, Lahore.

The second leg will be played on 21 October at Agriculture University Ground, Faisalabad.

Wapda dominated the show right from the word go and could have won the match by dozen goal margin but their front-runners Arif Mehmood, Qamar Zaman and Imran Niazi missed chances after chances and same was the story in second session when substitute strike Khuda Bakhsh missed three real sitters.

The Faisalabad outfit, led by former Pakistani skipper Haroon Yousuf, fell back and were content crowding their striking circle, denying Wapda repeatedly with Faisalabad born keeper Muhammad Afzal in fine form.

Wapda missed five real chances in first half through Arif (9th min), Imran (16th, 32nd min), Mahmood Ali (39th min) and (44th min) as first half ended 0-0.

The arrival of Bakhsh in second session gave more energy to Wapda but he himself missed chances in the 47th and 49th minute from point blank range. The 58th minute saw left full Akram Masih smacking the cross-bar with angular 40-metre drive. PMC did come out of their shell in the last 15 minutes when former Pakistan U-19 skipper Imtiaz Butt entered the arena but his passes were wasted.

But just when it looked as if the PMC would romp home with a point, a attack in the 81st minute saw midfielder Mahmood Ali cut in from right wing and his tricky angular ball across the area was transformed into ball by Imran Niazi with full-length dive. It was 250th goal of the event in the 93rd match.

It was all over for the PMC in the final minute of the game when Referee Rauf Bari penalized defender Yasir Mehmood for reckless challenge on Arif Mehmood. The resultant spot-kick was converted himself by Arif.

Wapda recorded 21 points from 13 matches while the PMC pocketed 14 points from 14 games.—Agencies
