LAHORE, Oct 13: After finalising arrangements to supply flour at subsidised prices to 2,900 of the 7,000 or so tandoors in Lahore, the city district government on Monday constituted special teams to ensure sale of roti at Rs2 a piece in the Punjab capital.

Town officers (Regulations) of all the nine town municipal administrations would head the teams that would submit within three days a detailed report to the district coordination officer regarding number of rotis sold at Rs2 a piece and the subsidised flour supplied to each enlisted tandoor daily in Lahore.

The teams would also prepare a list of tandoors situated on narrow lanes and streets where flour trucks could not reach, so that mini-trucks or pick-ups could be arranged to ensure supply there.

Food department officials informed DCO Sajjad Ahmad Bhutta at a meeting that some 16,000 20-kg flour bags were being supplied daily to tandoor owners in Lahore, and a mechanism had been evolved to verify the process.

While calling a meeting of mill owners on Wednesday to discuss the increasing prices of fine flour, the DCO directed them to ensure that tandoor owners should have at least four-day quota in advance.

Meanwhile, special magistrates nabbed 12 tandoor owners for selling roti at more than the fixed prices and sent them behind the bars. One owner was sentenced for two weeks while a fine of Rs93,500 was also imposed on them.
