PESHAWAR, May 9: The government is following the policy of decentralization of powers to revamp the existing system of governance in all sectors of life, particularly the education sector, to provide equal opportunities of education to all citizens.

The NWFP Governor, Syed Iftikhar Hussain Shah, said this while presiding over a meeting of the Board of Governors of the Fazl-i-Haq College, Mardan, here on Thursday. The meeting was also attended by Education Minister Syed Imtiaz Gilani and Secretary Education Arbab Shahzad.

The meeting reviewed the overall performance of the college, especially its administrative, academic and financial affairs, and took a number of decisions.

Terming the role of teachers and parents equally vital for academic progress as well as character building of the students, he said that curriculum alone can not serve the purpose unless it was taught with total devotion and utmost attention.

#PRESTON VARSITY:# The NWFP Information and Education Minister Syed  Imtiaz Hussain Gilani has said that the rulers have used education for discrimination and not for creating equality in the society.

Speaking at the 5th convocation of the Peshawar campus of Preston University, he said the ruling class had confined the resources of the country to themselves by using a language for education which the poor did not know. According to a handout issued on Wednesday, he said it was  a stumbling block before the masses.

He said the government had taken initiative to improve the situation by starting teaching of maths and science from class 6th in government schools in English. He said the people were demanding extension of the programme to their areas.

#PPI adds:# Talking to a delegation of Preston University, led by its president, Dr Abdul Basit, at the Governor’s House on Wednesday, Governor Syed Iftikhar Hussain Shah said education is the government’s first, second and third priority.

He said the government was not only utilizing its own resources to promote education in the province but it would also welcome every cooperation from the private sector in this regard.

The governor said education was the only effective solution to all the social problems.
