TORONTO, Oct 8: The four-nation Twenty20 cricket tournament beginning here on Friday is ‘wide open’, according to Sri Lankan captain Mahela Jayawardene.

“The 20-20 is a different game altogether. It’s a game which compels every batsman to score runs on each ball. Therefore, it’s always difficult to forecast the outcome of any match,” he said on arrival here on Tuesday night.

Pakistan, Zimbabwe and hosts Canada are the other teams participating in the four-day event. The teams will play league matches from Friday to Sunday with top sides going to the final which is set for Monday, which being the thanksgiving day is a holiday.

A fairly large crowd is expected to turn up to see the final at King City Maple Leaf ground, 23 kilometres north of Toronto.

Sri Lanka will take on Zimbabwe in the opening match with Pakistan playing Canada later in the afternoon. Two matches will be played every day.

Jayawardene said the King City tournament will be very challenging and his team would have to show its full potential to win it.

“I’m hopeful of my team’s success,” said the 31-year-old Sri Lankan skipper.—Correspondent
