‘Aitkaf city’ caves in

LAHORE, Sept 22: Three people sustained injuries after tents erected at ‘Shahr-i-Aitkaf’ — a temporary establishment set up by Minhajul Quraan Tehrik in Township -- collapsed following a heavy windstorm and downpour on Monday, say witnesses and rescuers.

Shahr-i-Aitkaf is annually organised by Prof Tahirul Qadri in Ramazan at an empty space adjacent to his seminary Minhajul Quran Tehrik Madrassah which is attended by thousands of people.

The injured, Zaheer Abbas, Aamir Farooq and Saleem, were shifted to the Jinnah Hospital.

“Hundreds of people got trapped beneath the structure after the bamboos supporting the tents and a portion of a nearby wall could not sustain a strong wind and heavy rain,” said Mobeen Ahmad who was attending the religious gathering. That caused a panic among the participants, he added.

Township Station House Officer Iftikhar Ahmad said a few people sustained minor injuries in the incident and were rescued after removing fallen tents.

FIRE: Industrial chemical worth Rs3 million was gutted after a fire broke out in a shop owned by Afzal in Lunda Bazaar near Akbari Gate on Monday.

Rescue 1122 extinguished the fire which reportedly erupted owing to short-circuit.
