KARACHI: Yaum-i-Ali observed

Published September 23, 2008

KARACHI, Sept 22: The main procession in connection with the martyrdom of Hazrat Ali (AS) culminated peacefully at Hussainian Iranian Kharadar after passing through its traditional route on Monday.

Police and Rangers had made extraordinary security arrangements for the city’s main procession, which was taken out from Nishtar Park following a Majlis-i-Aza addressed by Allama Agha Ali Murtaza Zaidi. Traditionally, for over last 26 years, Allama Talib Jauhari used to address the mourners on the 21st of Ramazan in Nishtar Park but Allama’s poor health did not allow him to address this year, the organisers say.

Medical camps and bookstalls were set up along the route of the procession. The entire route was sealed by the police.

The participants of the procession wailed and beat their chests in mourning for the Imam, who was martyred while offering Fajr prayers in a Kufa mosque over 13 centuries ago. The mourners offered Zuhar prayers on M.A. Jinnah Road near Imambargah Ali Raza. Arrangements for the prayers were made by the Imamia Students Organisation. The procession culminated at Husainian Iranian where the faithful were offered Iftar.
