LAHORE, Sept 9: Dissatisfied with the performance of checkpoints at provincial borders meant for curbing smuggling, particularly of wheat and flour, Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif has constituted special teams to monitor working of these posts.

A notification issued here on Tuesday said the one-member provincial monitoring teams would review anti-smuggling arrangements made by administrations of bordering districts.

Members Board of Revenue Punjab Nazir Saeed, Aftab Ahmad Maneka, Khalid Hanif and Member Chief Minister's Team Muhammad Tariq Ayub will inspect the posts for one week (Sept 7 to 13) at Rahimyar Khan, Dera Ghazi Khan, Rajanpur, Bhakar, Mianwali, Rawalpindi and Attock districts.

For the next week (Sept 14 to 20), Cooperatives Registrar Hassan Iqbal, Housing and Urban Development Secretary Mazhar Ali Khan, Chief Minister's Inspection Team member Jehanzeb Khan and Member Board of Revenue Muzaffar Mehmood will inspect the checkpoints.

Literacy and Non-Formal Basic Education secretary Maaroof Afzal, Health department special secretary Shafqatur Rehman Ranjha, Local Government and Community Development Special Secretary Tariq Mehmud Khan and Home Special Secretary Ahmad Kamal Khan will perform duties from Sept 21 to 27.

A police officer of DIG rank will accompany each team for monitoring of checkpoints while in case of non-availability of a DIG at least an officer of SSP rank will perform the duty, says the notification.

Each team will stay permanently at its headquarters for a period of one week and pay surprise visits to the checkpoints at any time of the day or night.

While inspecting the checkpoints, it will be ensured that registers are maintained properly and the staff concerned is regularly available on duty.

In case of absence of staff or non-maintenance of inspection register etc, the teams will take action on the spot. All the DCOs and DPOs have been asked to assist the teams, adds the notification.
