LAHORE, Oct 24: Fayyaz Khan got the better of Mahmood Khan in three sets (4-6, 6-4, 7-5) to move into the quarter-finals of the men’s singles event of the 38th National Grass Court Tennis Championship at the Bagh-i-Jinnah court on Wednesday.

The match between Nomi Qamar and Shahzad Khan was also well- contested in which the former won after a tie-break in the first set. Nomi won at 7-6 (9/7), 6-0.

Besides, Fayyaz and Nomi the other six players who also moved into the last eight stage in the event were: Rashid Malik, Tahir Iftikhar, Aqeel Khan, Hameed-ul-Haq, Mohammad Shafiq and Asim Shafiq.

In the men’s doubles event, Mahmood Khan and Hameed-ul-Haq were fully extended before they overcame Fayyaz Khan and Arif Feroze at 6-2, 2-6 and 6-3.

Babar Ali managed to beat Imran Rasool in the boys’ singles under-18 event, after a three-set battle at 6-3, 4-6, 6-6-1.

In the boys’ singles under-14 event, Shahid Arshad was also extended fully, before the former won the match at 5-7, 7-6 and 6-4.

Mehvish Chishti defeated Azmesh Khan in a one-sided ladies’ singles match without dropping a game.

Aqeel Khan and Tahir Iftikhar beat Mohammad Nadeem and Aqeel Husain 6-1, 6-1. Babar Ali and Ashiq Rasool beat Shahrukh and Gulzeb Niazi 6-4, 6-4. Asim Shafiq and Rashid Malik beat Mohammad Awais and Mahmood Ahmad 6-1, 6-0. Irfanullah and Inam Gul beat Wakeel Khan and Shahzad 6-3, 6-2.

Arif Feroze and Mohammad Khalid beat Bilal Salahuddin and Haris Aziz 6-1, 6-0. Mohammad Shafiq and Aurangzeb Khan beat Bashir Nisar and Imran Rasool 6-1, 6-0. Shahid Khan and Nomi Qamar beat Nauman Aleem and Saeed-ul- Haq 7-5, 6-3. Mahmood Khan and Hameed-ul-Haq beat Fayyaz Khan and Arif Feroze 6-2, 2-6, 6-3.

Boys’ singles under-18:

Babar Ali beat Imran Rasool 6-3, 4-6, 6-1. Mahir Nisar beat Said Mohammad Khan 6-1, 7-5. Shehryar Niazi beat Imran Sajid 6-4, 6-1.

Boys’ singles under-14:

Fahd Ali beat Mehr Haider 6-3, 6-1. Kumail Hasan beat Mohammad Tariq 7-5, 6-2. Khurrum Nazir beat Zain-ul-Haq 6-0, 6-0. Shahid Arshad beat Danial Shahrukh 5-7, 7-6, 6-4.

Girls’ singles:

Mehvish Chishti beat Azmesh Khan 6-0, 6-0. Nausheen Ihtesham beat Iram Arshad 6-1, 6-0. Shiza Ihtesham beat Anza Waheed 6-0, 6-0. Nida Rahim beat Lubna Ahsan 6-1, 6-0.

Veterans’ doubles (under-45 and above):

Iftikhar Rao and Zahid Zafar walk over against Lt.-Col.Dar and Mushtaq Malik. Laeeq Pirzada and partner beat Col Khalid and Col Naeem 7-6, 6-1.

Naveed Anjum and Shaheen Minhas beat Waqar Nisar and Khawaja Khurrum 6-3, 6-3.
