ISLAMABAD, Sept 4: The Supreme Court (SC) has summoned top police officials to inquire into a scuffle between the protesting lawyers and law enforcers outside the court building on Thursday.

Sources said the SC registrar asked the senior police officials to meet him on Friday morning to discuss the incident in which seven policemen and three lawyers suffered injures.

The scuffle broke out when a group of 25-30 lawyers from Multan Bar Association broke through the human shield of police personnel and scaled the gates of the Supreme Court building after removing barbed wires spread around the entrance.

The attorneys were intercepted by a group of law enforcers headed by Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) East circle Kamran Adil when some of them were about to jump over the gates.

The personnel pushed them back which led to exchange of harsh words, sparking anger among the lawyers.

As a result, a scuffle broke out between them and the lawyers pelted the policemen with stones besides attacking them with sticks snatched from law enforcers.

Leaders of the lawyers and other police officials rushed to the spot and rescued the seven policemen. One of the sub-inspectors, Yunus Gujjar, suffered multiple injuries and a skull fracture. Three lawyers were also injured. Additional Deputy Commissioner Rana Akber Hayat and Assistant Commissioner Secretariat Shahbaz Tahir suffered bruises.

The police restored to baton charge to push the attorneys back to get the area vacated.

Earlier, the office-bearers of the Islamabad Bar Association had reached an agreement with the capital administration that they would stage a two-hour sit-in outside the Parliament House for the reinstatement of deposed judges. However, some of the lawyers broke the agreement which led to the scuffle.
