Protest against police

GUJRANWALA, Aug 26: People on Tuesday staged a demonstration outside Aroop Police Station, alleging that policemen were picking innocent citizens to extort money from them.

The protesters, carrying placards and banners inscribed with anti-police slogans, raised slogans against the corrupt policemen and blocked the road by burning tyres.

They said Aroop Station House Officer Shahnaz Ahmad was patronising the corrupt staff of his police station.

They demanded that the authorities dismiss from service the entire police station staff.

Later, the protesters dispersed after senior police officials reached there and promised action against the corrupt policemen.

PROTEST: The residents of Jinnah Road staged a protest against the delay in the construction of a road on which work was started eight months ago.

The protesters demanded that Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif order a case against the contractor and highway officials. They said the contractor left the work incomplete after bribing highway officials.

MURDER:

ARRESTED: The Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) arrested an alleged human smuggler from Gujrat.

According to FIA, Arshad, whose name had been put on red book, was arrested from his house on a tip off.

He allegedly sent more than 1,000 people to European countries after extorting Rs900,000 from each. He was wanted to FIA in 36 cases of human smuggling.

STUDENT KILLED: A student of 10th class was run over by a bus on GT Road. Noman of the Government High School was on his way to school when a bus crushed him to death. The bus driver fled.
