PESHAWAR, Aug 26: A single nomination paper was filed here for the presidential election with Peshawar High Court acting Chief Justice Jehanzeb Raheem, the presiding officer of the polls here.

The paper was filed by Munir Ahmad Niazi, who claimed to be chief of Qaumi Ittehad Party, a hitherto unknown party.

He stated that his proposer was an MNA from Punjab, Mohammad Siddique, and seconder was an MPA from Punjab, Ghulam Sabir.

“The post of president should be non-political and a non-partisan person should be elected to it,” he told journalists after submitting his nomination papers.

He said that the president should not be a toothless person, therefore, he opposed abolishing the presidential powers of dissolving the assembly under Article 58(2) (b).

Meanwhile, the provincial election commissioner, Mohammad Afzal Khan, stated that they had completed all the arrangements for the Sep 6 presidential polls.

He told mediapersons that MPAs would cast vote at the NWFP Assembly here and the elections would be held through secret ballot.
