LONDON, Aug 22: Flamboyant Surrey batsman Mark Ramprakash could be facing more disciplinary action after he became involved in an altercation with Sussex’s Murray Goodwin at the Oval during the County Championship.

The row erupted when Goodwin accused Ramprakash of running down the middle of wicket in an attempt to damage the surface, on the first day of the match between Surrey and Sussex on Wednesday.

Ramprakash marched towards Goodwin pointing his bat and the duo stood toe-to-toe until the umpires and Sussex captain Mike Yardy intervened.

Play resumed, but when Ramprakash completed his century he again made an angry gesture at Goodwin. At the close of play, the batsman then pointed his bat at the umpire John Steele, a gesture that could earn him an official rebuke from the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB).

Ramprakash, who recently scored the 100th century of his career, is perhaps better known for his victory in the BBC television series Strictly Come Dancing than for his career as a cricketer.

While his dancing earned him scores of admirers, his temperament on the cricket field earned him the nickname “bloodaxe,” and he has had a number of well-publicised spats.

In a 1998 Test match against South Africa, Ramprakash was given out by umpire Daryl Hair when a ball brushed his shirt, and responded with the outburst “You are messing with my career.” That earned him a fine and a one-match suspension.

In 2003 he was reprimanded by the ECB for “using language that is obscene, or of a serious, insulting nature,” during a County Championship game against his former side Middlesex.—AP
