SHEIKHUPURA, Aug 18: The police allegedly tortured a proclaimed offender to death in custody on Monday. However, the police tried to depict his death an outcome of a shootout as his body found near Faisalabad Road bore bullet wounds as well.

The Sadar police had arrested Falak Sher, alias Garu Baloch, of Airanwala, for his alleged involvement in dacoities three days back.

Investigation In-charge Arshad Latif, a sub-inspector (SI), interrogated Falak Sher and allegedly used third degree method to extract his confession. He died in a police cell on Monday. But, the police later threw his body in fields on Faisalabad Road to show that he had been killed in a shootout.

Hundreds of protesters, including the family members of the PO, later took out a demonstration on Faisalabad Road and threw traffic out of gear for around four hours.

DPO Zaeem Iqbal reached the spot and pacified the demonstrators. He also ordered registration of a murder case against SHO Imran Khalid, SI Latif, Inspector Abbas Palwan, Housing Colony police post in-charge Sharif Kamboh and constables Farman, Qurban and three others.

SHO Khalid was immediately suspended from service and sent to the Police Lines.

Victim’s brother Nadim Baloch told reporters that Falak Sher was innocent and the police had deliberately tortured him to death.

The DPO assured the protesters that justice would be provided to the aggrieved family.

CASE: The Ferozewala police have registered a case against two doctors for allegedly showing negligence in handling a delivery at their private clinic in Rachna Town on Monday.

Sofia Bibi reached the clinic to deliver her baby where doctors Imran and Shahid handled her. However, her condition deteriorated in the course of labour on which she was referred to Lahore but she died on her way.

The family of the victim got a case registered against the doctors on which the police arrested both of them.

Doctors Shahid and Imran said the case against them was unjustified and illegal.

KILLED: A speedy police van on patrol duty overturned near Baigpur on Gujranwala Road, killing constable Niaz and injuring six others.

Nowshera Virkan police are looking into the matter.
