HYDERABAD, Aug 12: Second spell of monsoon rains lashed Hyderabad on Tuesday evening for 35 minutes breaking the heat spell continued from several days. The rain is likely to have a salutary effect on paddy crop.

Airport’s meteorological office has recorded 16 millimetres of rains which it said began at 7.10pm and continued till 7.45pm.

Rains affected the power supply in various parts of the city as reports indicated that power breakdown occurred even before rains lashed the city.

No casualty was reported till filing of this report.

On account of rains, Kotri barrage officials have reduced the flow of water in perennial and non-perennial off-taking canals of the barrage as a precautionary measure.

The flow of River Indus at upstream Kotri barrage was recorded at 108,820 cusec and 76,080 at downstream. Withdrawals for the four canals are recorded at 32,740 cusec.

Sindh Abadgar Board’s general secretary Mehmood Nawaz Shah said the rain would have a good effect on almost all crops except onion. It would hit cotton picking to some extent, he added.

In Mirpurkhas, rainfall along with lightning hit the city causing suspension of power supply to various localities.

Water supply was disrupted. Rain began in evening and continued for half an hour. Rainwater accumulated on roads. Power breakdown hit water supply causing problems to people. After an hour power supply restored in some areas. Rain also hit Mirwah Gorchani, Digri, Kot Ghulam Mohammad, Jhuddo, Shadi Palli.

In Sanghar, two people were injured when lightning hit them in village Qabil Mangrio. A dust storm followed by heavy rains lashed Sanghar district. Khipro, Hathungo, Jam Nawaz Ali, Bhit Bhaiti, Khahi, Shahpur Chakar, Khadro, Bakhoro and other areas received heavy rains.

Cotton and other crops standing in low-lying areas were damaged.

In Qabil Mangrio village, Ameer Bux and his wife were seriously injured when lightning hit them while they were eating dinner.

In Thatta, heavy rains lashed the district inundating low-lying areas in all major towns. Thatta, Sujawal, Mirpur Bathoro, Jati and other areas received rains.

In Larkana, the local met office has cautioned the district government Qambar-Shahdadkot for heavy rains in the area and on the mountains of Khairthar within the next 24 to 36 hours.

The DCO of Qambar-Shahdadkot has asked the Mukhtiarkars for taking precautionary measures to face any eventuality with the particular reference to keeping vigil eye on the dyke.

In Nawabshah, and surrounding towns of Sakrand, Qazi Ahmed, Daur, Bandhi and other areas received rains followed by dust storm.
