Danson passes fitness test

BEIJING, Aug 8: Britain forward Alex Danson has passed a fitness test and is available for selection for the Olympic hockey women’s competition, the team said in a statement on Friday.

Danson had suffered a ligament strain during a practice match against New Zealand in Hong Kong last month and was racing against time to regain full fitness ahead of the Games.

Britain begin their campaign with a match against reigning champions Germany in pool B on Sunday.

“We are delighted for the team and for Alex personally,” coach Danny Kerry said.

Favourites Argentina, bronze medallists in 2004, are gunning for their maiden Olympic crown after crushing Germany 6-2 in the Champions Trophy final.

Britain are also grouped with Argentina, Japan, New Zealand and United States.
