KARACHI, Aug 7: An additional district and sessions judge, South, recorded on Thursday statements of two prosecution witnesses in the murder case of television artiste and producer Afreen Baig.

The witnesses, Sub-inspector Fayyaz and Assistant Sub-inspector Sabir, appeared in court and testified in the case.

The judge, Sultan Mohammad Awan, who is conducting the trial inside the Central Prison, adjourned the hearing till Aug 21.

Afreen Baig, a TV artiste and producer, was killed at her DHA residence in October 2004 allegedly by her driver, Mohammad Bux Umrani, and his wife, Zahida.

Her husband, Farooq Mengal, is alleged to have masterminded the murder of the TV artiste. The driver of the victim and his wife, who was working as a maid at Mengal’s house, are the co-accused in the case.

In his confessional statement before a judicial magistrate, Mohammad Bux Umrani stated that he had killed the woman on the inducement of her husband, Farooq Mengal, as he suspected Afreen had a relationship with her former husband Masjood. Zahida was declared absconder in the case.
