Seeds advance

KARACHI, July 13: All the seeded men’s and women’s players crossed yet another hurdle without much resistance by making it to the last four in the Subh-e-Nau Tennis Cup at the Modern Club on Sunday.

Top seed Aqeel raced to a 6-2- 6-2 victory over Tanveer Ashiq and is drawn to meet fourth seed Nomi Qamar, who prevailed over Yasir Khan 7-6, 1-1 (retired).

In the other matches, second seed Asim Shafik had a 6-1, 6-0 short work against Abid Ali Akbar. He now meets Jalil Khan, who beat qualifier Danish Ahmed 6-2, 6-3.

Similarly, Sara Mansoor, Ushna Sohail, Saba Aziz and Natasha Afridi propelled into the pre-finals. Second seed Ushna advanced into the last four without playing her quarter-final match. She was to meet the winner of Aman Kazi-Rija Sani but both did not show up for their pre-quarters the other day.

Ladies singles (quarter-finals): Sara Mansoor bt Mehak Khokhar 6-1, 6-3; Saba Aziz bt Uzma Zakriya 6-0 – retired; Natasha Afridi bt Shahida Kauser 6-0, 6-1.

Boys’ U-13 singles (quarter-finals): Kashan-ul-Haq bt Mohammad Ibrahim 4-1, 4-0; Murad Khan bt Faraz A. Faiz 4-2, 2-4, 4-2; Khawaja Hamza bt Aqeel Khan 4-0, 4-0; Ali Muraj bt Amir Ali 4-1, 5-4.

Juniors’ Under-17 singles (quarter-finals): Faizan Khurram bt Talha Saeed 6-2, 6-2; Hamza Pataudi bt Yahya Issa 1-6, 6-1, 6-2; Heera Ashiq bt Adil Kohari 6-1, 6-3. Men’s doubles (quarter-finals): Aqeel Khan/Jalil Khan bt Faizan Khurram/Syed Zohair Raza 6-0, 6-1; Taimur Mahmood/Abid Ali bt Saad Baloch/Umer Kazi 6-4, 6-3; Nomi Qamar/Asad Ali bt Taimur Iftikhar/Imran Ahmed – walkover.

Ladies doubles (quarter-finals):

Ushna Sohial/Sara Ahmed bt Sania Saeed/Uzma Zakriya 6-1, 6-0.
