Anas annexes U-17 title

KARACHI, June 14: Fourth seed Anas Khan squeezed past third seed Hussain Aziz in three sets to claim the juniors’ under-17 title in the Hyderabad Open tennis championship at the Hyderabad Gymkhana on Saturday.

Both the finalists enthralled the select audience with their brisk game in the final, which lasted for some 90 minutes.

Anas, 16, gained 1-0 lead by winning the opener 6-4. However, he lost the second 6-7 (5-7) in a tie-breaker before bouncing back to win the decisive set 6-3.

Saad Baloch teamed up with Umar Qazi to annex the men’s double crown by getting the better of Abid Ali and Abdul Majeed 6-1, 6-3.

Saad is on course for a double crown as he faces Abdul Majeed in the men’s singles final on Sunday.

Juniors’ under-17 final:

Anas Khan bt Hussain Aziz 6-4, 6-7 (5-7), 6-3.

Men’s doubles final:

Saad Baloch/Umar Qazi bt Abid Ali/Abdul Majeed 6-1, 6-3.

Sunday’s fixtures:

Men’s singles final 6.00pm.
