ISLAMABAD, June 9: Indian members of the Pakistan-India Judicial Committee on Prisoners arrived in Karachi on Monday to discuss modalities for implementing the committee’s recommendations, particularly release of prisoners who have completed their sentence.

The four-member Indian delegation would visit jails in Karachi, Lahore and Rawalpindi and meet Indian prisoners, said a Foreign Office statement.

The five-day visit was originally scheduled for April after the two countries had exchanged consolidated lists of prisoners in each other’s jails on March 31.

Sources said the delegation would also meet Pakistani members of the committee and government leaders to discuss conditions of prisoners and ensure their humane treatment.

India claims that there are 614 Indian civilians in Pakistani jails, but figures provided by the Foreign Office show that there are some 390 Indian prisoners in the country after 99 were released as a goodwill gesture during the visit of Indian External Affairs Minister Pranab Mukherjee in Islamabad last month.
