May Day observed

TOBA TEK SINGH, May 1: The National Workers Party (NWP) observed May Day here on Wednesday.

A peasants’ meeting was held in Chak 305-GB. Punjab NWP president Chaudhry Fateh Muhammad paid tributes to the Chicago workers who sacrificed their lives for the rights of workers. It was the result of their struggle that the working day for the labourers was of eight hours now, he added.

Union council Nazim Chaudhry Muhammad Naeem said farmers in his constituency were being rendered jobless due to irrigation water shortage. He urged the government to make arrangements for immediate supply of water in villages which were at the tail-end of canals.

Known Punjabi poet Ali Muhammad Bumb also addressed the gathering and rendered his poems.

BAHAWALNAGAR: May Day was observed in the district on Wednesday.

Different NGOs, RASTAH Foundation, Action Aid and COMMON, organized seminars to show solidarity with the workers all over the world.

Interestingly, the All-Pakistan Clerks Association and other organizations of government employees just issued press releases on the occasion.

SIALKOT: The ‘May Day’ was observed in both Sialkot and Narowal districts on Wednesday.

Various labour organizations took out rallies in Sialkot, Daska, Sambrial, Ugoki, Pasrur, Chawinda, Shakargarh, Zafarwal, Baddomalhi and Narowal to mark the day.

GUJRANWALA: Workers and low-paid employees of various government and semi-government departments staged a ‘May Day’ rally here on Wednesday.

The rally was organized by the Employees Welfare Federation.

The participants carrying banners and placards chanted slogans in favour of labourers’ rights. Starting from the Lorry Adda, the rally terminated at the Gondlanwala Chowk after parading on the GT Road.

Speakers, including Federation president Mian Ataur Rehman and district bar association president Mian Maqsood Ahmad, urged the government to provide better facilities to factory workers.
