KARACHI, May 27: Two men died and two others injured in an accident on Dr Ziauddin Ahmed Road on Tuesday morning.

A duty officer of the Artillery Maidan police station said that a private coaster (JE-1835) overturned near Shaheen Complex while reportedly trying to avoid an obstacle installed in the middle of the road for the purpose of cleaning drainage.

Police said that two passengers, Syed Waseem Hasan and Haq Nawaz, the employees of Karachi Port Trust and the Karachi Electric Supply Company, respectively, died on the spot. Both the victims were in their 50s.

Waseem Haider and Ibrahim, who were injured in the accident, were taken to the Civil Hospital for treatment.

Police arrested the coach driver, Javed Ashraf, who told them that the vehicle over turned as its tire rod broke down.

Killed

A youth was gunned down on resistance during an armed holdup in a minibus in Sharea Noor Jehan police limits late Monday night.

Police said that armed suspects boarded a minibus and soon afterwards started looting the passengers inside. A 20-year-old man, later identified as Muhammad Mansoor, was shot at from a close range as he tried to put up resistance. He was taken to Abbasi Shaheed Hospital where he succumbed to wounds. Following the legal formalities, the body was handed over to his relatives.

The victim used to work at a goldsmith shop, police said, adding that an FIR (No 188/2008) under Section 302 of the Pakistan Penal Code was registered against unidentified bandits

Raid

Four persons were arrested in a raid conducted at a small manufacturing unit of Mainpuri (a type of tobacco) in Malir on Tuesday.

A duty officer of the Khokhrapar police station said that police raided a house in Pak Kausar Town and found two tonnes of Mainpuri and other ingredients required to manufacture the product. Police also recovered betel nut from the house. Further investigation is under way.
