KARACHI, May 26: Hosts Aga Khan University (AKU) and Institute of Business Management (IoBM) beat their respective opponents to complete the semi-final line-up at the 6th AKU Inter-university football tournament 2008 as they joined Sunday’s winners Ziauddin University and Institute of Business Administration.

Monday’s quarter-finals at the lush AKU Ground remained evenly-matched, low-scoring encounters. AKU beat Bahria University 1-0 and IoBM sent Altamash Institute of Dental Medicine (AIDM) tumbling 1-0.

The lone goals for the winning sides were also scored in the first six minutes in both matches. AKU scored the winner through their first year student, right midfielder Faisal Sajjad, who slammed in the goal from the far post.

Ali Zafar, the Bahria goalkeeper, who made plenty of brilliant saves later on, just couldn’t stop Faisal’s powerful hit.

Earlier, in the other quarter-final, the goal was scored by none other than Shahid Khan Afridi who plays as a fullback for IoBM. Shahid headed a cross pass from left-winger Omair into the goal, which could not be blocked in time by AIDM’s goalie Abdullah who failed to reach his position in time.

The rest of the game saw the AIDM boys, who were all looking good in their new gray and black jerseys, defend well but unable to keep possession of the ball long enough to score.

Tuesday’s fixtures:

First semi-final: Ziauddin University vs Institute of Business Management at 4.00pm.

Second semi-final: Institute of Business Administration vs Aga Khan University at 5.00pm.
